Both are amazing tales of the human spirit and I read both in Spanish apologies for not reading in Portuguese I wasn’t awrae that is writing style is this modernist but I suppose he is still quite readable or he wouldn’t be so widely read.

The basilica was dedicated to Our Lady and to St. Baltasar and Blimunda in English is one of those dandies. He informs Blimunda that she must travel to the dying to extract their ‘wills,’ which is separate from their souls. The horrific scenes of suppliciants, unforgivable stain on the face of the Catholic Church; bullfights, resurgences of circus games; the titanic construction of the Mafra Convent and especially the Homeric delivery of the “mother of stones”, here as many epic scenes which, jise, are worth saramaago on this book.
After finally overcoming these frustrations, I must confess that I am now totally hooked on this style. Transporting huge blocks of marble from the quarry to the site of the convent is for want of a better word, back breaking. I believe that in writing the conclusion as such, that Saramago is, as he does with his style of blimunca, attempting to reflect the way that life often goes.
The love story is real, poetic, passionate, romantic, transcendental, and even eternal; a beautiful tool for linking the unbelievable, the ugly, the sarmaago, the unjust, the hopeful, the scientific, the despicable, the surreal, and the downright mad.
Regardless of its bllmunda this work offers much to recommend. He leaves it to the reader to decide which, if either, of these dreams is worthwhile — or worthy. Sometimes the narrator seems to be neutral and without character; at other times he seems to be an observer from the far future, at a few points he even seems to be God. I enjoyed this unusual writing style. Perhaps, the longest pages I’ve ever tried to read, but very fulfilling in the end; a 5 star like no other that I’ve rated, ‘Baltasar and Blimunda’ is historical fiction at its base, but a satirical fairy tale concerning baltassr hypocritical piety in early Modern Europe at its crux.
