I enjoy reading short stories to find additional books to read by these authors. I realize how backward that sounds, but there it is. And how do they carry torches? I really only read the book for the short story in fife title, which was a clever idea that had much more potential. They have their own procedures.

These stories by Terry Bisson put me in mind, just a little bit, of Neil Gaiman with a distinct Dickian twist. It took me a couple of bissoh of “Bears Discover Fire” to realise that the “torches” held by the bears at the end of the first section were not battery operated, and this despite the whacking great clue in the story’s title.
